How Early Should a Taxi Pick You Up Before a Flight?
A simple method for working out your airport taxi pickup time so you arrive with the right buffer — not four hours early, not sprinting to the gate.
Getting the pickup time right is a balance: too early and you are bored airside for hours, too late and you are stressed. Here is how to calculate it properly.
Step 1: how long before departure to be at the terminal
- Domestic UK flight: 2 hours.
- Short-haul international (Europe): 2 hours.
- Long-haul international: 3 hours.
Add 30 minutes to any of these if:
- You are flying from Stansted, Luton or a Terminal at a busy time (early morning, Friday/Sunday evenings, school holidays).
- You have bags to check and it is peak season.
- You need assistance, are travelling with young children, or the airline has warned of long queues.
Step 2: how long the drive takes
Use a realistic door-to-terminal driving time for your actual travel time, not an average. A run to Heathrow at 4am is very different from the same run at 8am on a weekday. A good operator does this for you when you book — we look at typical conditions for your pickup time and add a sensible buffer.
Step 3: add a buffer
Add 15–30 minutes on top for the unexpected — a road closure, a slow set-down queue at the terminal, a spilt coffee before you leave the house.
Worked example
Long-haul flight departs 10:00.
- Be at terminal by 07:00 (3 hours before).
- Drive is normally 50 minutes at that time → leave home by 06:10.
- Add a 20-minute buffer → pickup at 05:50.
Should the car ever come earlier than that?
