Travelling With Skis, Golf Clubs, Surfboards or a Pram: Oversized Luggage Rules
How oversized and sports luggage affects your taxi booking: what counts as oversized, how much boot space it needs, and why you must declare it in advance.
Sports and baby equipment is bulky, awkwardly shaped and often long. It changes which vehicle you need. Here is how to book so it all fits — safely.
What counts as "oversized"
As a working rule, each of the following takes up about two standard suitcases of boot space:
- A pair of skis or a snowboard in a bag
- A golf bag (full set with clubs)
- A surfboard or bodyboard (length is the issue — some will not fit in a saloon at all)
- A boxed or bagged bicycle
- A large travel pram / pushchair, especially double buggies
- Musical instruments in hard cases (cellos, double basses)
Why you must declare it at booking
Two reasons:
- Vehicle choice. A saloon that seats four might only take one set of skis plus two soft bags. Four skiers with boot bags and cases need an MPV or minibus. We can only send the right vehicle if we know what you are carrying.
- Safety and the law. Long, heavy items cannot travel on passenger seats or laps — they must be secured in the boot or cargo area. If a vehicle turns up that cannot stow your gear safely, the driver cannot take it, and that is a wasted trip for everyone.
Practical tips
- Ski and golf trips: book one vehicle size up from your headcount. Six skiers → 8-seater. Four golfers with bags and cases → MPV or 8-seater, not a saloon.
- Prams: a folded single buggy usually fits a saloon boot alongside modest luggage. A double buggy plus a family's suitcases needs an MPV.
- Bikes: boxed bikes are long. Tell us the box dimensions.
- Add a note. When you book, use the notes field to list every oversized item and its rough size.
