How Many Suitcases Fit in a Saloon, Estate, MPV or 8-Seater?
Realistic luggage capacity for each taxi vehicle class, plus the 'step up' rule: if your group fills every seat and everyone has a big case, book one size larger.
Choosing a vehicle by passenger count alone is how people end up with a suitcase on their lap. Luggage matters just as much. Here is what actually fits.
Realistic capacity by vehicle
These are comfortable, safe figures — boot only, nothing on empty seats or laps, which is a legal requirement for hard luggage in most private hire vehicles.
Saloon (up to 4 passengers)
- 2 large suitcases + 2 cabin bags, or
- 3 large suitcases with 1–2 passengers.
- Great for couples, solo business travel and small families that pack light.
Estate / MPV (up to 5–6 passengers)
- 3–4 large suitcases + hand luggage, depending on model.
- As you add passengers, boot space shrinks — a full MPV of 6 people cannot also take 6 big cases.
8-Seater minibus (up to 8 passengers)
- 6–8 large suitcases + hand luggage with a lighter passenger load.
- A full 8 passengers with 8 large cases is tight — this is exactly where the step-up rule applies.
16-Seater minibus
- Group tours, sports teams and large families. Ask us for a luggage plan when you book.
The "step up" rule
If your group size matches the maximum seat capacity of a vehicle and everyone has a large suitcase, book the next vehicle size up.
Examples:
- 4 adults, 4 big cases → book an estate or MPV, not a saloon.
- 8 people, 8 big cases → book a 16-seater or two vehicles, not a single 8-seater.
It costs a little more but prevents a doorstep argument and an unsafe, overloaded boot.
Oversized items
Skis, snowboards, golf bags, surfboards, bikes (boxed or bagged) and large prams each count as roughly two standard suitcases. Tell us at the time of booking exactly what you are carrying so we send a vehicle that can take it — and so the driver is not surprised on the day.
