A licensed, pre-booked private hire car is a safe way to travel. The risk comes almost entirely from unbooked cars that pretend to be minicabs. Here is how to stay on the right side of that line.
Always book, never flag down
A private hire vehicle cannot legally pick you up unless the journey was booked in advance through a licensed operator. Any car that pulls up offering a ride you did not book is, by definition, not operating legally. Walk away, especially at night and outside stations, bars and airports.
Check these before you get in
When your driver details arrive, confirm:
- Driver's name matches the booking.
- Car make, model, colour and registration match the booking.
- The driver knows your name and pickup details without you telling them first — ask "Who are you here for?" rather than "Are you my driver?".
- A private hire licence disc is displayed (usually on the windscreen and/or rear).
If anything does not match, do not travel and contact the operator.
During the journey
- Sit in the back, ideally behind the front passenger seat.
- Keep your phone charged and to hand.
